Loafers, boat shoes and moccasins – what’s the difference?

Look a little further, and you’ll see that there are a whole range of different shoes hiding behind the word “loafer”. What they all have in common is a very casual look, and that they’re very easy to slip on and off. Beyond this, you’ve got the traditional loafer, made of leather or canvas and designed to be worn out and about for everyday use. For something a little more elegant, you might try suede shoes or moccasins, normally made from leather, split leather or Nubuck. Boat shoes, on the other hand, are very casual – first used by deck-hands on yachts, these are designed to provide comfort and grip in a style somewhere between a moccasin and a sneaker.

The right fabric and the right style

Now comes the fun part, choosing the fabric, color and style that suits you and your outfit. Do you want a shoe you can wear with smarter pants or jeans? Then a classic brown leather loafer or moccasin is just the ticket. A pair of chinos may be crying out for those stylish suede shoes, while the rebel in you may be leaning towards a more unusual blue denim model. Or you may just want to take it easy and lounge around the marina in a pair of navy boat shoes with your favorite Bermuda shorts.
